The Original Courthouse was built in 1899, designed by the Public Works Department. The Old Courthouse is positioned on Henderson Street, along with the Police Station Complex and Warders Cottages formed part of the original convict land grant that was established as part of the Fremantle Convict Establishment in 1851.
After the Old Courthouse closed in 1999 and the Fremantle Police Station followed in 2013, the precinct remained largely vacant. Recognised for its heritage significance, the site was listed by the State Heritage Department and prepared for public offering. Around 2017, our client, purchased the Fremantle Police Station, Old Courthouse, Warders Cottages, and adjoining buildings and land from the State Heritage Office.
The project involved the sensitive transformation of the historic Fremantle Courthouse complex - originally comprising a Police Court, Civil Court, judges’ chambers, jury room, male and female witness rooms, solicitor offices, and a two-cell lock-up with charge room and exercise yard - into a vibrant hospitality and entertainment destination.
Buckingham Redevelopment Co. was proud to be appointed as the Head Contractor for this significant heritage redevelopment. Drawing on our extensive experience in restoring and adapting heritage buildings, Buckingham Redevelopment Co. managed every aspect of the construction process - from structural restoration to the integration of modern services and finishes - ensuring the building’s original character was carefully preserved while introducing new life and functionality. Working alongside some of Western Australia’s most skilled architects, subcontractors and consultants, BRDC successfully delivered a project that celebrates Fremantle’s heritage while creating a thriving modern venue for the community.
